Current Weather

Typical Seasonal Weather

Fort Leonard Wood experiences all four seasons, which can be a big adjustment depending on where you're coming from. Summers are hot, humid, and sunny, with frequent afternoon thunderstorms. Fall brings crisp mornings, warm afternoons, and colorful foliage. Winters can vary—some years are mild, while others bring significant cold snaps, ice, and snow. Spring is mild but also the most active season for severe weather.

Tornado Season & Severe Weather

Missouri is located in a region known as “Tornado Alley,” and the Fort Leonard Wood area typically sees its strongest storm activity from March through June. Expect thunderstorms, heavy rain, hail, strong winds, and occasional tornado warnings. The installation uses emergency sirens and mass notification systems to alert residents, and local weather services are extremely reliable for early warnings. Staying weather-aware—especially in spring—is essential.

Winter Storms

Winter weather varies year-to-year, but newcomers should be prepared for:

  • Snowfall (usually light to moderate)

  • Occasional ice storms

  • Single-digit temperatures and wind chills

  • Slippery roads, especially on rural or hilly routes

Road crews in Pulaski County respond quickly, but winter driving skills are important. Many families keep an ice scraper, salt, and an emergency kit in their vehicles.

Humidity & Summer Heat

Expect high humidity from late May through early September. Daytime highs often reach the upper 80s to mid-90s, and “feels like” temperatures may climb over 100°F. Afternoon thunderstorms are common and can form quickly.
